Equity needs to have a constant and continuous presence in every theatre. As a representative body, Equity has an important part to play in the management structure of every theatre, therefore the stability of one continuous Equity Rep can help to develop a positive relationship with a theatre in a way that the temporary element of a company rep cannot.

An Equity Theatre Rep is the continuous representative of Equity in a Theatre. He/She works in conjunction with the theatre management and the acting company to maintain good relations and to ensure a healthy and safe workplace.

The primary function of the Equity Theatre Rep is to assist each new company with the election of a cast rep. This is usually done during the first week of rehearsals, preferably on the first day.

The Equity Theatre Rep also work with the Theatre management on ongoing issues within the theatre that arise from the cast reps, e.g. green room facilities for actors, dressing room conditions, etc.

The system has been in place since the February 2005 concentrating mainly on 3 theatres for the first six months from then expanding to further Theatres.
